The History of the Club

Hillview have been established for 34 years, starting out as John Bosco's Youth Club in 1974 and building at Hillview Cottage, Edithmead, hence the change of name in 1976 to Hillview Juvenile Carnival Club.

Our first entry "Monster Mash" was built for around £50, whereas our 2007 entry "Daddy Cool" cost £10,000, and the 2008 entry "Jester's Parade" estimated to cost around £14,500. Our current base is the Bristol Bridge Inn, Highbridge, thanks to Margaret and Jacqui Wall.

We have around 20 adult members and 21 children, we all have to do a lot of fund raising in our own time which we give freely. Most of the adults are trained strewards and do events such as the Glastonbury Festival, Glastonbury Extravaganza and the fire display. We also do fetes, raffles, sponsored walks, bag packing and whatever it takes to raise money to give 21 local children the opportunity to go on the carnival cart. Even though we do not take part to win we do enjoy taking part in the Carnival to raise alot of money for local charities.

Hillview's 2005 entry: Celebration which won 7 out of 7 Carnivals.

In all the years we have competed we have won 10 Juvenile County Cups and some of our proudest moments have been representing Carnival in the Easter Parade at Battersea in 1990, and winning the 7 out of 7 Carnivals in 2005 with "Celebration".

All the ideas for the carts come from club members and are chosen each year in January. The costumes are made by Lyn Burland and Tina Marshall. Everyone works very hard all year to get a cart on the road, Carnival cannot be called a hobby as it becomes a part of our lives.

Hillview would like to thank all of our helpers, supporters and friends, whom there are too many to mention.

Tina Marshall - Chairman
Hillview Juvenile Carnival Club.
